Youth Day 2012

Toronto has a whole host of festivals, concerts and events come summer time to keep Torontonians and visitors entertained and best of all most of these are free to attend. On Sunday 22nd July 2012 at Young and Dundas Square the 6th year of the annual Youth Day showcase event took place.

Youth Day is a non-profit event which was founded in 2005 by Tylaine Duggan as a positive step forward to help youths get involved in their passion of arts and music which in turn keeps them focused and off the streets. Youth Day features performances from youths mainly between the ages of 14-24 , and this year there were over 100 performances of live music bands, dancer, singers and rappers. Leading up to this main event there was a press conference as well as meetings and fundraisers which youths also took part in through volunteering.

This year Youth Day seemed to occur at the right time as there is a lot of focus on ‘Gun Crime’ in the city at the moment, a lot of the artists performances exemplified this in some form while showing their respects as friends and family mourn the deaths of two people, Shyanne Charles, 14, of Toronto, and Joshua Yasay, 23, of Ajax who were both killed while attending a BBQ a few weeks ago.

I was behind the scenes taking some snaps of all the performances and acts. My favourite was headliner JD-Era who has recently been signed to the label of Raekwon, of the legendary Wu-Tang Clan, he gave us a grand finale and also A-Game with the track that makes me bounce every time ‘…money made me do it!!’ take a look …
